Other Infowww.alturasduo.com Hailed as playing with "...marvelous virtuosity..."The Washington Post The Alturas Duo has been recognized as one of the most engaging ensembles performing in the chamber music world today. The only group of its kind, the Duo was formed with the idea of playing South American and classical music by bringing together the unusual combination of the viola, charango and guitar, and in doing so, creating passionate music that moves at ease between the Baroque, South American folk rhythms and new pieces written especially for the Duo. The Duo has performed in Brazil, Canada, Chile, Bolivia, throughout the US and Puerto Rico including recitals at: Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, the Smithsonian Institute, the Music Mountain Chamber Music Series, La Guitarra California, and the 34th International Viola Congress. Always in search of new music and collaborations, the Duo has worked with artists as diverse as: charango virtuoso Ernesto Cavour, guitarist and composer Horacio Salinas; flutists James Strauss, Jessica Warren-Acosta and Sergio Pallottelli and quena virtuoso Marcelo Pena-Lobo; pianist Polly Ferman and Argentine bandoneon legend, Daniel Binelli; the Choral Arts Society of Washington D.C., Coral Cantigas, the Voce Choir of Hartford; the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra and the Symphony of Southeast Texas. The Duo has held residencies at the Festival Eleazar de Carvalho in Fortaleza, Brazil and at the Hartt School of Music; and has been a featured performer on NPR. The Duo has worked closely with many composers and has premiered dozens of commissions, arrangements and transcriptions including recent works by; Javier Farias, Raimundo Penaforte, Alexander Silas Walker, Yovianna Garcia, Sergio Igor Chnee, Nolan Stolz and Ben Starr. The Duo took First Prize at the 2006 New England International Chamber Music Competition, and won the 2009 CMA / ASCAP (Chamber Music America / American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Award for Adventurous Programming.
Hailed as playing with "...marvelous virtuosity..."The Washington Post

The Alturas Duo has been recognized as one of the most engaging ensembles performing in the chamber music world today.

Finally, the Duo was named a "Goodwill Ambassador" for the Chilean-American Foundation and is looking forward to working with them to help raise money for the victims of the recent earthquake in the south of Chile.

The 2011-12 concert season will see the Duo maintaining a busy schedule of concerts, master classes and lectures in the United States, Bolivia and Brazil. There will be performances and premieres with Coral Cantigas of Washington, DC, The Bella Voce Woman's Choir of Vermont, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and performances for the Baltimore and Dallas Classical Guitar Societies and Swarthmore College among others.

The name Alturas (Spanish for heights) is derived from the poem "Alturas de Macchu Picchu" by Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda (1904-1973).

Carlos Boltes was born in Santiago, Chile where he began his musical studies by learning the charango from his brother Giovanni Vaccani, later mastering that instrument while touring extensively throughout South America as a member of the Chilean group Barrocco Andino. He holds a Bachelor's Degree from the Universidad Católica de Chile and a Master's Degree from Carnegie Mellon University both in viola performance. His main teachers have been: Enrique López, Atar Arad, Larry Dutton and Steve Larson. He has been principal violist of the Orquesta de Cámara del Teatro Municipal de Santiago and the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra and has recorded for Naxos, Brioso and CBS Records. Mr. Boltes has been a recipient of the Boston Fund Individual Artist Fellowship and an Andes Foundation Performance Grant and he is also Connecticut 2010 "Latino de Oro" award recipient, currently on the faculty of the Eleazar de Carvalho Music Festival in Fortaleza, Brazil and the Hartt School Community Division of the University of Hartford, in West Hartford, Connecticut.

Scott Hill, a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, earned an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Lakehead University with Sean Mundy and a Masters degree in guitar performance and a Graduate Professional Diploma in chamber performance from the Hartt School of Music where he studied with Richard Provost. Mr. Hill has performed and lectured throughout Canada, the United States and South America as both a soloist and chamber musician and most recently premiered Thomas Schuttenhelm's "Balada" for soprano and guitar and "Pequena cancion" by Javier Farias. Mr. Hill is a Canada Council for the Arts grant recipient and has performed in master classes for some of today's finest musicians including Oscar Ghiglia, John Williams and the Miami String Quartet. Currently, Mr. Hill is on the faculty at the Hartt School Community Division of the University of Hartford, West Hartford, Connecticut and the Eleazar de Carvalho Festival in Fortaleza, Brazil.

Known by her musically expressive and charismatic performances, Puerto Rican guitarist, composer, and teacher Yovianna García Alvarado is a unique, young promise in the classical guitar scene.

After participating in her grandmother’s choir as a child and attending the numerous performances her aunt and mother presented as music teachers, Yovianna began violin studies at the age of eight, at the Escuela Libre de Música Juan Morel Campos, until she discovered the guitar at age eleven through her mother. After hearing a recording of Segovia, she fell in love with the classical guitar. She enrolled in the Instituto de Música Juan Morel Campos at age fourteen to study classical guitar with Santos Torres Toro and Héctor Hernández Maldonado. Later, she earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in classical guitar performance at the Music Conservatory of Puerto Rico under the tutelage of Leonardo Egúrbida. Then, she went on to earn a Master of Music degree in classical guitar performance at the Hartt School of Music (University of Hartford) under the guidance of Richard Provost. She has also taken courses and master classes with renowned artists such as Nicholas Goluses, Roland Dyens, Manuel Barrueco, Eduardo Fernández, Benjamin Verdery, Berta Rojas, Oscar Ghiglia, Angel Romero, William Kanengeiser, Nigel North, Jason Vieaux, David Starobin, and Jeremy Jouve.

Yovianna has performed for the Miami International Guitar Festival, Connecticut Guitar Society; New Music Hartford contemporary music series; Primer Festival de Guitarra Clásica in Ponce, Puerto Rico; was a soloist with the Sgt. Katherine E. Brunelle Memorial Orchestra in New Hampshire; has toured in United States, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic; and has recorded her first solo CD ‘Portrait’. She regularly performs in her native Puerto Rico and in the New England area and exercises her diverse musical skills on a weekly basis as a music minister at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Hartford, Connecticut, where she resides.

Yovianna’s awards include second place at the National Classical Guitar Competition in Puerto Rico, the Guitar Department Award from the Conservatory of Puerto Rico, the Instrumental Performance Excellence Award from the Instituto de Música Juan Morel Campos, and the Thomas Armstrong Toro Fine Arts Excellence Award.

Inspired by her family’s teaching tradition, and trained by guitar pedagogy pioneer Richard Provost, and using the Suzuki method; Yovianna currently teaches at The Hartt School Community Division of the University of Hartford; the Music and Arts Center in West Hartford, Connecticut; and at her own private guitar studio. She also teaches master classes and technique workshops for festivals, educative institutions, and guitar societies, including most recently the Connecticut Guitar Society, the Wheeler School, the Moultonborough Academy, and the Puerto Rico Music Conservatory.

Yovianna’s composing and event-organizing skills have also brought her many successes. In addition to premiering and touring her piece “Nítido” in Puerto Rico with the Alturas Duo, her other compositions have been featured in festivals including the Primer Festival de Guitarra Clásica in Ponce, Puerto Rico which Yovianna herself organized with a team from the Fundación Chiry Vassallo. She is also the Artistic Director of a concert series at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Hartford, Connecticut.

Other Infowww.strunzandfarah.com Strunz & Farah, performing together since 1980, have created an entirely new expression for the acoustic guitar. From Costa Rica and Iran respectively, Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah have brought the cultural riches of their native lands to their highly virtuosic, rhythmic, and improvisation-rich original instrumental compositions, profoundly influencing guitarists everywhere. Their meeting in 1979 marked the first time that Latin American and Middle Eastern music came together on the guitar. Jorge Strunz was born in Costa Rica to a family with lineage that includes a past Costa Rican president on one side and one of Simón Bolívar's favorite lieutenants on the other. Given his first guitar at age 6, he grew up also in Colombia, Mexico, Spain, England and Canada, studying and playing flamenco and classical guitar. He performed flamenco guitar professionally as a teenager, accompanying Spanish dancers and singers. He then turned to focus more on his own Latin American roots, Caribbean and Latin folk, and later, jazz. Jorge single-handedly invented a new style of Latin guitar playing that is an original synthesis of hand techniques from flamenco, Latin folk and classical guitar with state-of-the art high-speed linear plectrum playing. Ardeshir Farah was raised in a beautiful old house in Iran that echoed with the sounds of the violin of his uncle, who performed with the Teheran Symphony. Later, he moved to England for schooling. He played guitar since childhood, focusing on popular music and improvisation. He has performed and recorded extensively with many of the top expatriate Persian singers and musicians in the US who fled Iran after the Revolution. Ardeshir was the first to use Middle Eastern inflections in a contemporary guitar setting. His style has a unique exoticism. The travels of his diplomat father brought...

Strunz & Farah, performing together since 1980, have created an entirely new expression for the acoustic guitar.

The travels of his diplomat father brought Jorge to the United States, while Ardeshir arrived as a student of architecture. Ardeshir came to see Jorge perform with his Latin jazz group Caldera (4 albums on Capitol), and decided to meet him. The day the two guitarists met, it was instantly obvious that they were brothers of the guitar from opposite ends of the earth, even playing Czardas (a devilishly fast Hungarian Gypsy piece) flawlessly in harmony at top speed. They quickly prepared a repertoire, began performing, and recorded their first project, Mosaico in 1980 (self-produced). Although record companies at that time were not ready for this exotic new music ("where are we going to sell this, Timbuktu?"), jazz radio embraced it and world/jazz industry pioneer Richard Bock got the duo signed to the prestigious jazz label Milestone (Frontera, 1983, Guitarras, 1984). These records defined world music on guitar years before the “world music” category even existed.

The intimate audiophile recording Misterio was put out by Waterlily Acoustics /AudioQuest in 1989. Following this came the phenomenally successful recordings Primal Magic (1990) and Américas (1992), put out by Mesa/Atlantic, which won Billboard's World Music Album of the Year and a Grammy nomination, respectively, and spent months in the top of Billboard’s World Music charts. In 1994 and in 1998, Jorge received two Presidential awards from the government of Costa Rica for his cultural contributions.

The artists then started their own record company, Selva (which means "jungle" in Spanish), as an artist-friendly alternative and put out Heat of the Sun, (top 10 Billboard World Music chart), Live, the artists' first live performance recording, and Wild Muse. They won back the rights to their hit recordings, Primal Magic and Américas, which have been re-released on Selva. The popular Best of Strunz & Farah (2000) and Stringweave (2001), an elegantly intimate recording graced with many superb guest musicians, followed. Subsequent recordings include Rio de Colores (2003), a river of colors— a diversity of sounds and musicians, Strunz & Farah In Performance, the duo's first DVD-

video release, live in an intimate, acoustic setting, Zona Tórrida (2004), a more complex and progressive recording, Desert Guitars (2005), which pulls together S&F's Middle Eastern works, and Jungle Guitars (2006), a sister compilation of cuts inspired by the neotropical rainforests.

S&F’s most recent recording, Fantaseo, is a journey through folk and urbane Latin America, rustic Iran, and includes an appreciative nod to American jazz, albeit underpinned with their intrinsic ethnic touch.

In all of these recordings (which have sold well over a million), one can savor the fruits of one of the most unique yet enduring and harmonious musical collaborations in the world of the guitar.

The Music

S&F's music is perhaps best described as original international acoustic instrumental improvisational guitar music, world guitar, or ethnojazz. Their music is saturated with their cultural roots: Afro-Caribbean, Latin American folk, flamenco and Middle Eastern music, and draws heavily from the jazz concept of improvisation.

Although influenced by flamenco, the music is distinct from it. There is a phenomenon in flamenco called "ida y vuelta" ("roundtrip"), which describes the borrowing of Latin American elements into Spanish flamenco, which had originally influenced the music of the New World via the "Conquista" (conquest). Rumba, colombianas, guajira and milonga are examples of Latin American inspirations borrowed by flamenco; however, in Latin America, these sources represent entire worlds of music, richer in variety than their borrowed counterparts. The same can be said of Middle Eastern music.

The "ida y vuelta" nature of S&F's relationship to flamenco is exemplified by the influence they have had upon flamencos such as popular flamenco group Ketama's borrowing of the theme from S&F's 1983 piece "Quetzal" (from Frontera) for their hit "Vente pa Madrid", among others.

Strunz & Farah are widely respected in the flamenco community. They count as friends Paco de Lucia (who once suggested Jorge to John McLaughlin as a replacement for Al DiMeola in the guitar trio), Pepe Habichuela, Agustín Carbonell "El Bola", Jose Miguel Carmona (of Ketama), Gerardo Nuñez, Ramón Jimenez, and Rafael Riqueni, many of whom they have also played with.

Other renowned world, jazz and classical musicians they have recorded with include Dr. L. Subramaniam, Ashish Khan, Heyadeh, Manoochehr Sadeghi, Bijan Mortazavi, Jihad Racy, Edwin Colón Zayas, Stanley Clarke, Hubert Laws, and Liona Boyd. They have also recorded with Joan Baez, and have recorded and performed often with Jackson Browne.

Their international career began with a major prize at the 1979 Young Artists Competition in Bratislava. Odair is based in Brussels where he teaches at Ecole Supérieure des Arts. Their standard classical repertoire includes transcriptions of the great Baroque keyboard literature of Bach, Rameau and Scarlatti and adaptations of works by such diverse figures as Gershwin, Ginastera and Debussy. Their touring programs are always a compelling blend of styles, periods and cultures.

The Assads are also recognized as prolific recording artists, primarily for the Nonesuch and GHA labels. In 2001, Nonesuch Records released “Sérgio and Odair Assad Play Piazzolla,” which later won a Latin Grammy. Their seventh Nonesuch recording, released in the fall 2007, is called “Jardim Abandonado” after a piece by Antonio Carlos Jobim. It was nominated for Best Classical Album..”

A Nonesuch collaboration with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg in 2000 featured a collection of pieces based on traditional and Gypsy folk tunes from around the world. The Assads and Ms. Salerno-Sonnenberg continue to tour together, displaying unique chemistry, humor and stunning virtuosity. In 2003, Sérgio Assad wrote a triple concerto for this trio that has been performed with the orchestras of São Paulo, Seattle and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. In the summer of 2004, Sérgio & Odair arranged a very special tour featuring three generations of the Assad Family. The family presented a wide variety of Brazilian music featuring their father Jorge Assad on the mandolin and the voice of mother Angelina Assad. GHA Records has released a live recording and a DVD of the Assad Family live at Brussels’ Palais des Beaux-Arts.

The Assad Brothers collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma is ongoing. In 2003 the Brazilian record “Obrigado Brazil” was released featuring Rosa Passos, Egberto Gismonti and Cyro Baptista. Sérgio arranged several of the works on the disc, which captured a Grammy in 2004. A world tour followed, culminating in live concerts at the opening of Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall and another Sony release of the live concert. In 2009, the Assads were featured on Yo-Yo Ma’s chart topping release, “Songs of Joy & Peace,” which features other guest artists as diverse as James Taylor and Dave Brubeck. In the piece “Familia” Yo-Yo plays Sérgio’s composition featuring mother, Angelina Assad, sister Badi and children Clarice, Rodrigo and Carolina. The release topped both the classical and the mainstream Billboard charts and won a Grammy for Best Classical Crossover. Yo-Yo and the Assads appeared together on Garrison Keillor's "Prairie Home Companion" in December 2009 and are working on a plan for a future tour of the U.S.

Artist Information:

Michèle Evans has won every major competition of Theatrical Ballroom in the United States and abroad with her long-time partner David Rosinski, including: the 1985 and 1986 United States Championship, 1986 World Invitational in Blackpool, England, the Silver Medal at the 1995 United States Championship and second place in the 1995 World Invitational.

She has made several television appearances; among them, CPTV’s Championship Ballroom Dancing, Star Search, a special presentation at Walt Disney World for Telemundo and at Madison Square Garden for ESPN.

She was featured with her partner, David Rosinski in the New York Times in 1989 and again, in the spring of 2001 when her work with Hartford Youth Dance Initiative was part of an article on Ballroom Dancing for youth.

Michèle has been teaching in Connecticut since 1981. She was a faculty member of the Hartford Ballet School, and she also taught at the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven, Fred Astaire Studio, and the U.S. Dance Club. She taught young children as well as senior citizens at Community Centers in Rocky Hill, Bloomfield, Windsor, South Windsor and West Hartford. From the Masonic Hall in West Hartford, she taught for many years and developed a unique method for teaching ballroom dancing which attracted an ever increasing student body. Michèle finally moved into her own space in Hartford in June 2009.

<!--

Jose Paulo, vocalist

He was born in the slums of Rio de Janeiro but never felt limited by that. Rather, he believed that the efforts of his mother in raising him against all odds, with strong moral values, would make him the strong and self-confident person he is. Singing was in his blood from the very beginning and after six years living in Hartford, CT, Jose Paulo is releasing his first CD, through Albatroz Music, the most prestigious Brazilian Jazz and Bossa Nova label in the world.

"Canzoni Stonate", the first Jose Paulo CD had a world premiere in Hartford, Connecticut, a city Jose Paulo call his own, on December 13th at 8 PM, with a cocktail-party and pocket show at the "Learning Corridor".
Jose Paulo has lived in Hartford since 2002. Since then, he has been working hard in all kinds of jobs, like thousands of immigrants searching for their own way to achieve the American Dream.

His "big break" came after he was discovered by Brazilian art patron and philanthropist Ester Sanches-Naek, who campaigned for him to appear at the most prestigious Brazilian event in the U.S., the "Brazilian International Press Awards", in Fort Lauderdale, in 2006. Since then he is one of the most praised newcomers in the Brazilian music scene in the U.S. earning himself a nomination for the same award in 2007 and 2008. Theses performances caught the attention of Albatroz Music who chose him and multi-award winning singer Rose Max to be the two first talents under contract of the new Albatroz / Green Music partnership.
